You only get one pair of eyes, so it’s important that you take good care of them for as long as you can. As you spend so much time staring at a computer screen, whether it’s for work or play, it can do serious damage to your eyes if you’re not careful. It’s likely you’re already suffering from eye strain, headaches or blurry vision. To keep your eyes healthy and functioning efficiently, here are a few things you can do to save your vision. The 20-20-20 Rule To deal with eye strain that commonly occurs from staring at a computer screen or reading for too long, this is a quick exercise that takes less than 30 seconds. Focus your gaze on an object about 20 feet away from you. Do this for 20 seconds every 20 minutes and your eyesight will thank you. Palming An exercise that requires very little effort on your part and works to help your eyes relax. Just rub your hands together until they’re warm and place your palms over your closed eyes. Leave them there for a few minutes as the heat radiates through your eyes. Rolling Your Eyes You can perform eye exercises anywhere, so there’s really no excuse. An easy exercise to do is briefly crossing or rolling your eyes every few seconds. This is very helpful to release tension felt from staring at a monitor for too long. There is sunscreen for your skin, but what about protection for your eyes? Fortunately, there are plenty of ways you can protect your eyes this summer. Here are some simple ways you can keep your eyes safe when the sun is out: Wear Sunglasses with Complete UV Protection The most obvious way you can protect your eyes from the sun is by wearing sunglasses. You know that you should protect your skin from UV rays, and your eyes are no different. Keep in mind that rays from the sun can also reflect off of surfaces such as sand or water. Use Goggles in Water If you have not been swimming for a few months, your first dip in a pool can feel dreadful on your eyes. The chlorine in it, which is designed to protect you from exposure to germs, also has the potential to hurt your eyes. The simplest solution is to wear goggles every time you go swimming in a pool or any other body of water. Where chlorine is not present, there is a chance for contaminants to hurt your eyes. Wash Hands and Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes Studies show that the best way to protect yourself from the spread of contagious diseases is simply by washing your hands daily. It is crucial for avoiding the contraction of eye-related conditions like conjunctivitis. Most people develop conjunctivitis after touching something that someone else has been in contact with after they have rubbed their eyes. Wear Hats Even if you wear sunglasses when you go outside, you are not entirely protected from UV rays. Sunglasses usually have gaps...

In today’s world, it’s impossible to go a full day without the use of some form of technology whether it’s your laptop, cell phone or iPad. All of these items emit blue light that causes eye strain and can lead to more serious problems if proper care is not applied. Blue light can damage your retina and is toxic. This means it can pass through your cornea and cause long term issues for your eyes. For these reasons, it is incredibly important to use a blue filter coating so that you can go on with your daily life which usually involves the constant use of tech gadgets without having to worry about damaging your eyes. It’s impossible to avoid the use of a laptop, smartphone or computer so proper protection is necessary. If you’re wondering what the best form of protection is, blue light filter glasses are a great solution. How Blue Filter Coatings Reduce Eye Strain Blue filter coatings help block the blue light so that it doesn’t strain your eyes and shields them from all of the negative risks. This coating is anti-reflective which helps reduce strain-related discomfort including blurry vision, eye fatigue and even headaches that many of us suffer from as a result of looking at a computer screen all day long. Your eyes can be very important indicators of potential diseases that may be present in your body. Having regular eye exams are not only a good idea to keep your eyes and vision healthy, your optometrist can also detect other problems you may not have noticed before. In fact, there are more than 30 different conditions that show symptoms in your eyes. Eye doctors and optometrists are usually the first to spot certain problems and advise you to seek further medical diagnosis. A recent study of 120,000 patients done by the insurance company VSP Vision Care showed that an eye exam was the first to indicate 34% of diabetes cases, 39% of high blood pressure cases, and 62% of high cholesterol cases. If you have been avoiding getting regular eye exams because you think your vision is fine, it’s time to rethink how you view eye exams. Here are a few reasons why you need to call your optometrist to set up your eye exam and get on a schedule to get them regularly. Can spot early diabetes If you have red spots in your eyes, this could be a sign of diabetes. When your blood sugar builds up too high, blood vessels will begin to block and swell up, which can burst into tiny blood vessels that travel to your retina. If this isn’t treated soon enough, it may lead to impaired vision or even blindness. Causes of bloodshot, swollen, red, or dry eyes If you are susceptible to swollen, red, dry, or bloodshot eyes, your optometrist will be able to determine what the root cause is. If...

Your eyesight is one of the most impactful of the five senses we have. As you only have one pair of eyes, it’s important you take care of them. To encourage you to properly take care of your eyes, here are a few things you need to know about eyeglasses. You’ll need glasses eventually Even if you have 20/20 vision, and have had perfect eyesight for your entire life, it’s still likely that you’ll find yourself squinting at your phone or a menu at some point. Mid-life vision loss, known as presbyopia, is defined as losing your ability to focus on objects up close. This is when you should consider buying reading glasses. However, if your vision alters in a way that prevents you from focusing on distant objects, then it’s a sign you need to see your eye doctor. Scratches are a big deal A small scratch at the far edge of your lens isn’t much of a deal-breaker, but one that takes up a significant amount of space can be a problem. Straining your eyes to get a clear view through or around the scratch can cause eye fatigue. Scratches can’t simply be buffed out, especially if they’re deep, so new lenses may be the only solution to keep your eyes healthy and fully functional. Lenses aren’t made of glass When they were first introduced, eyeglasses were made from glass because it was clear enough to avoid obstructing the wearer’s view. Today, however, lenses are made from plastic, as glass can’t stand up to everyday use. If they were to break while on someone’s face, glass lenses...

Eyeglasses are expensive items, especially if they are prescription-based. Cleaning them the wrong way may cause them to scratch or suffer other damage. Listed below are common steps which can be taken to ensure that your prescription glasses, sunglasses, safety glasses, and sports eyewear remain in a good condition for an extended period of time. Clean Hands Prior to touching the lens, ensure that you get rid of all the dirt, lotion, and grime on your hands. Wash your hands with lotion-free soap and a lint-free clean towel to avoid getting any specs of dirt particles onto the lenses. Rinsing Dust and debris can cause glasses to scratch while we clean them. Thus, it is important to gently rinse the glasses under a lukewarm stream of water. Completely avoid hot water since it can cause significant damage to the glasses. Washing Apply lotion-free dishwashing liquid to the lenses. Since dishwashing soaps are highly concentrated, a small amount of soap will be sufficient. Rubbing Gently rub all parts of the lenses for a couple of seconds. Ensure cleaning the nose pads, ends of the temple, and behind the ear rests too. Thoroughly cover the edges where lenses meet the frame, since skin oils, dust, and debris often accumulate in this area. Rinse again Clean the soap off from all areas of the glasses thoroughly, since failure to do so can cause the lenses to appear dirty after they dry. Shake Gently shaking the glasses will help eliminate most of the water. Drying Use a new dish towel or a cotton towel to wipe the lenses dry. Make sure the cloth...
